Director: David Leitch

Writer: Kurt Johnstad

Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Atomic Blonde is a gripping and electrifying spy thriller that delivers an action-packed cinematic experience, which left me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Starring Charlize Theron in the titular role, the film immerses viewers into a gritty, neon-drenched world of espionage, intrigue, and betrayal.

The supporting cast, including James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, and John Goodman, deliver strong performances, adding depth and complexity to the story. The plot unfolds in a nonlinear manner, which just adds to the twists and turns that lead into a stunning climax.

Set in the backdrop of the late 1980s during the Cold War, the movie showcases Theron’s exceptional acting prowess as she embodies Lorraine Broughton, a British MI6 agent with a deadly set of skills and mysterious past. Theron’s portrayal of Broughton is nothing short of mesmerizing, blending strength and vulnerability in a character that commands attention in every scene.

Choreographed with amazing precision and filmed in a way that feels raw and authentic, the film’s action sequences are simply spectacular. Intense hand-to-hand combat scenes, high-octane car chases through the streets of Berlin, Atomic Blonde doesn’t hold back in delivering adrenaline-pumping thrills. Theron also performed her own stunts, which elevates the film to a completely new level, and makes her character’s physicality and resilience all the more believable.

Now, I will admit that Atomic Blonde is not everyone’s cup of tea. The intricacies of the plot might be a bit convoluted for some viewers, as it requires close attention to fully grasp the narrative’s twists and turns. However, the magnetic energy and performance of the ensemble cast more than compensate for any narrative complexities.

Overall, Atomic Blonde is a thrilling and visually captivating spy film that showcases Charlize Theron’s exceptional talent and cements her status as a powerful action star. The movie delivers with its adrenaline-fueled action sequences, stylish presentation, and compelling story. If you’re in the mood for a heart-pounding, espionage-filled ride, Atomic Blonde is undoubtedly worth watching.

Film Review: The Hunt, 2020

Film: The Hunt

Release Date: March 11, 2020

Director: Craig Zobel

Writer: Nick Cuse & Damon Lindelof

Overall Rating: 8/10

The Hunt is a 2020 satirical horror thriller film directed by Craig Zobel, starring Hilary Swank, Emma Roberts, Betty Gilpin, and just a complete diverse ensemble cast. The movie revolves around a group of strangers who wake up in a remote location, only to realize that they are being hunted for sport by a mysterious group of elitists.

Zobel’s film was generally received with mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. However, some praised the movie for its dark humor, intense action sequences, and clever social commentary on the current political climate in the United States. The film explores themes such as polarization, conspiracy theories, and the dangers of echo chambers. Others found the movie to be too provocative and felt that it didn’t strike the correct balance between satire and social commentary, leading to a somewhat muddled message.

Personally, I enjoyed The Hunt. Although, it is far cry from a horror movie. Thriller, sure, but definitely not horror.

What really makes this movie enjoyable is its spot-on and close-to-perfect dialogue that humorously mocks both sides of the political divide. No one is safe. It is worth noting Zobel did a fabulous job in not portraying one side “better” or “worse” than the other. The film playfully pokes fun at everyone without it being overtly mean, allowing us to laugh and no in recognition at ourselves and those around us, regardless of our political leanings and beliefs.

The entire cast is just amazing, but both Hilary Swank and Betty Gilpin stole the show. Their commitment to their roles was on point, and the chemistry among the characters was continually engaging.

If you enjoy satirical thrillers that poke fun at current sociopolitical issues, The Hunt is right up your alley.
