Book: Disobedience

Author: Naomi Alderman

Publication Date: March 2006

Overall Rating: 4/5 Stars

Disobedience by Naomi Alderman is a literary tour de force that delves into the intricate tapestry of faith, identity, and the complexities of human relationships. Set against the backdrop of a close-knit Orthodox Jewish community in London, the novel follows the journey of Ronit, a woman who returns to her roots after a long absence, only to confront the clash between tradition and her own desires.

Alderman’s writing is a masterclass in nuance, capturing the subtle tensions that exist within families and communities grappling with the push and pull of conformity and individuality. The characters are exquisitely drawn, their struggles and vulnerabilities making them utterly relatable, while the exploration of same-sex attraction in a traditional context adds a layer of depth and authenticity. The narrative’s exploration of the intersection between faith, sexuality, and personal agency is handled with both sensitivity and unflinching honesty, inviting readers to consider the intricacies of personal autonomy within the confines of cultural norms. Her prose is elegant and evocative, painting a vivid picture of a world that is at once insular and expansive.

While the pacing might occasionally falter, the emotional resonance of the story remains steadfast. Disobedience is an exquisite meditation on the forces that shape us and the courage it takes to embrace our true selves, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a thought-provoking and beautifully rendered narrative.

Play that Song Again…

Music has been a huge factor in my life for as long as I can remember.

Recently, I was talking with my older brother about how certain songs hit different now that I am older. Songs that I have loved for years, but I now have a new appreciation for them possibly because I have lived life.

Here are 10 songs that hit different and are currently on a consistent rotation:

Film Review: A Deep Dive into Disappointment

Film: The Meg

Release Date: August 10, 2018

Director: Jon Turteltaub

Writer: Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, Erich Hober

Overall Rating: 3.5/10

“The Meg” promised a thrilling and epic adventure, but sadly, it falls flat like a deflated floatie at the shallow end of the pool. This overhyped film attempts to ride the wave of giant shark movies, but it’s nothing more than a disappointing splash in the cinematic ocean.

First and foremost, the storyline is as shallow as a kiddie pool. We’re introduced to a supposedly menacing prehistoric megalodon, but instead of instilling fear, it elicits laughter with its absurdly exaggerated actions. The lackluster character development leaves us floating aimlessly, unable to connect emotionally with anyone on the screen.

While Jason Statham is known for his action-packed performances, even he can’t save this sinking ship. His portrayal of Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea rescue diver, is as one-dimensional as the ocean’s surface. The script gives him little to work with, leaving him floundering in a sea of clichés.

The film’s attempts at humor are as stale as a shipwreck’s cargo. The jokes are so predictable that you can see them coming from miles away, making the supposed comic relief feel like an attempt to plug holes in the sinking narrative.

But perhaps the most egregious offense is the CGI. The portrayal of the massive megalodon is cartoonish and laughable, reminiscent of a B-grade SyFy channel movie. The scenes lack tension and excitement, and the shark’s attacks feel more like a pool noodle gently nudging the characters.

Even the supporting cast fails to keep their heads above water. With cardboard cutout characters and cringe-worthy dialogue, they add nothing to the film’s appeal, leaving us uninterested in their fates.

“The Meg” tries to ride the coattails of the shark movie genre, but it drowns in a sea of mediocrity. From the lackluster storyline to the laughable CGI, this film leaves audiences feeling like they’ve been stranded on a deserted island of disappointment. Swim far away from this cinematic sinkhole.

Conquering the Impossible

Ending relationships are hard regardless of the circumstances. Period.

Sure, one could argue that the end of some relationships are harder than others. But only those in the relationship have a baseline for what makes it hard or not. Every experience is different, there are none that are exactly the same. Similarities, absolutely, but I hesitate to say exactly the same.

Is it possible to be friends with an ex? Does the circumstances on how or when the relationship ended make a difference? Does the circumstances of the relationship itself dictate whether or not friendship is at all possible once it ends?

What about balancing co-parenting and friendship with an ex? Is that possible? Is it easy to understand and respect the lines of where co-parenting starts/ends and where friendship starts/ends?

I wish I knew the answer to these questions.

Truth is, I’m still figuring this out myself.

A Father’s Love

In the cradle of a my arms,

A love so strong, a love that warms.

With gentle touch and tender gaze,

I’ll guide you through life’s winding maze.

Through laughter shared and tears that flow,

My love remains a steady glow.

In every triumph, every fall,

I’ll be there to catch you, standing tall.

My heart a fortress, strong and true,

A love that’s boundless, never through.

In every heartbeat, you’ll find my grace,

A love that time cannot erase.

Uncharted Territory

Dealing with grief and falling in love simultaneously is uncharted territory.

Investing in a new relationship was the furthest thing from my mind when we reconnected. Ok, maybe not *the* furthest thing, but I never expected to fall in love with you so easily when my heart had already been shattered by grief.

I tried to play it cool. I tried to play it off. I tried to fight the tears. I tried to fight the pain.

But I couldn’t. Not with you.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t help but bare my soul to you. Let you see the tears, let you see the pain. I was so sure that it would have been too much for you. I would be too much for you. But I’m not.

You have loved me through the pain, comforted me through the tears. You have allowed me to grieve without an expiration date. You have supported me readily. You have chosen to love me. On purpose. Every day for the last several months.

The good days. The bad ones. And every day in between. Through everything you have continually shown me love and grace.

With every step, I am discovering more of this territory. It is not as terrifying as it was before.

“You were the current that carried me.”

Film Review: Atomic Blonde, 2017

Photo by Denise Jans on Unsplash

Film: Atomic Blonde

Release Date: July 28, 2017

Director: David Leitch

Writer: Kurt Johnstad

Overall Rating: 8.5/10

Atomic Blonde is a gripping and electrifying spy thriller that delivers an action-packed cinematic experience, which left me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Starring Charlize Theron in the titular role, the film immerses viewers into a gritty, neon-drenched world of espionage, intrigue, and betrayal.

The supporting cast, including James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, and John Goodman, deliver strong performances, adding depth and complexity to the story. The plot unfolds in a nonlinear manner, which just adds to the twists and turns that lead into a stunning climax.

Set in the backdrop of the late 1980s during the Cold War, the movie showcases Theron’s exceptional acting prowess as she embodies Lorraine Broughton, a British MI6 agent with a deadly set of skills and mysterious past. Theron’s portrayal of Broughton is nothing short of mesmerizing, blending strength and vulnerability in a character that commands attention in every scene.

Choreographed with amazing precision and filmed in a way that feels raw and authentic, the film’s action sequences are simply spectacular. Intense hand-to-hand combat scenes, high-octane car chases through the streets of Berlin, Atomic Blonde doesn’t hold back in delivering adrenaline-pumping thrills. Theron also performed her own stunts, which elevates the film to a completely new level, and makes her character’s physicality and resilience all the more believable.

Now, I will admit that Atomic Blonde is not everyone’s cup of tea. The intricacies of the plot might be a bit convoluted for some viewers, as it requires close attention to fully grasp the narrative’s twists and turns. However, the magnetic energy and performance of the ensemble cast more than compensate for any narrative complexities.

Overall, Atomic Blonde is a thrilling and visually captivating spy film that showcases Charlize Theron’s exceptional talent and cements her status as a powerful action star. The movie delivers with its adrenaline-fueled action sequences, stylish presentation, and compelling story. If you’re in the mood for a heart-pounding, espionage-filled ride, Atomic Blonde is undoubtedly worth watching.

Unapologetically Thunderous

Photo by Cooper Baumgartner on Unsplash

Sinéad O’Connor was badass. She was unapologetically outspoken. Fearless. A true trailblazer. Vocal powerhouse. Personable. Socially conscious.

Musically, her most notable hit was “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which is a haunting ballad that touched millions with its raw vulnerability. The song’s success catapulted her to international stardom and earned her critical acclaim, including several Grammy nominations. The music video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” is nothing short of iconic, featuring her close-up emotional performance, it remains one of the most memorable visuals in music history.

But Sinéad was a bigger powerhouse than we have ever gave her credit. She was outspoken on various social and political issues, and she used her platform to advocate for causes close to her heart. She was fearless in both her actions, music, and her activism.

There is no denying that she left an indelible mark on the world. Her refusal to conform to societal norms and unwavering commitment to her principles earned her a place as a trailblazer for future artists and activists alike.

Sinéad O’Connor continually challenged that status quo by encouraging dialogue about taboo topics, and using her art as a catalyst for change. Her legacy will live on and continue to inspire artists and advocates who seek to make a positive impact on the world.

Rest in Peace, Sinéad. You will be undoubtedly missed.

Under the Moonlit Sky

When the moon found the sun
He looked like he was barely hanging on
But her eyes saved his life
In the middle of summer

Panic! At the Disco – “When the Day Met the Night”

Gazing at the moon, I find myself lost in its timeless beauty, just as I am lost in the depths of your eyes. Like the moon’s gravitational pull on the tides, your presence pulls me irresistibly closer, creating an unbreakable bond between us.

With every phase, the moon reminds me of the phases we’ve shared, and how each moment has shaped our love story. Like a guiding light, the moon watches over us, whispering the permanency of our everlasting love and togetherness.

We continually create memories that shimmer against the moon like stardust, forever etched in the tapestry of our hearts. As the moon stands witness to our love, it becomes a symbol of the infinite possibilities of our affection and commitment.

So, let us dance beneath the moon’s tender gaze, hand in hand, letting its celestial magic envelop us in a world where time slows down, and our love shines brighter than any star in the vast expanse of the sky. For with you, my love, every night becomes a timeless love story written by the moon’s gentle hand.

A Missing Piece

Photo by Sandy Millar on Unsplash

Grief is not easy nor is it linear.

I have heard countless people tell me this over the years, but I didn’t truly understand it until I lost my grandma last year. It wasn’t unexpected. She had been in and out of the hospital quite a bit over the last few years. I even got to say “goodbye” during one of her hospital stays.

“You got blessed with extra time.”

“At least you got to say goodbye at some point.”

“She lived a long and beautiful life.”

“The memories you’ve created will live on forever in your heart, just like she will.”

But none of that gives me any comfort. None of that will bring her back. None of that takes away the pain. None of that fills the hole that has been left by her passing.

Sure, some days are easier than others. There are days where I can talk about her and smile. But then there are days where I can’t even think about her without being reminded I won’t ever see her again.

My naivety sheltered me from the reality of grief. I never thought it would be this hard. The constant battle with grief that death brings is unimaginable.
